NHAHA 2010-2015 Goals
Business Plan SUMMARY 2010-2015
This version of the Business Plan is intended to replace the previous 5-year plan

BACKGROUND

Haitian leaders and advocates dub the census 2000 numbers of Haitians in the US, conservative. They submit that close to 1.2 million Haitians live in the United States, with 500,000 in New York, 200,000 in Florida, 150,000 each in Boston and Chicago, 100,000 in California, and the rest scattered throughout the United States. Haitian health disparities are believed to be exacerbated by limited English Proficiency, immigration status, lack of knowledge about available health insurance, lack of child care services, unfamiliarity with the health care system, low levels of consumer awareness, and lack of basic knowledge about health, disease and medical care.

NHAHA was established in 2003 for the purpose of reducing health disparities among Haitians by enhancing communication, promoting and facilitating collaborative projects and fostering cooperative relationships among similar organizations through coordinated resource and information sharing, advocacy, capacity building and education.

FRAMEWORK - NHAHA’s work is based on a health improvement framework in three phases: Assessment, Capacity building, Leadership, Interventions and Evaluation. The priorities yielded from the first five years fall into three domains of public health practice: Health Improvement, Health Protection and Health and Social Care Quality. These domains are supported with broad community goals and objectives that drive NHAHA’s scope of work. The scope of work comprises of the following strategically selected community-level interventions: public policy and advocacy, annual conference and regional meetings, community health planning and development, research tools materials, technical assistance, and public health education. Each intervention is further specified with activities and formulated outcomes.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS - NHAHA’s past five years activities have included five annual national conferences (two in New York one in Boston and two in Florida); Regional planning forums; and World AIDS Day Awareness campaign. In addition, NHAHA has been engaged in policy efforts around language access, Census 2010, and has been providing health information through monthly health updates. In the area of Research, NHAHA is collaborating on the publication of a paper on HIV/AIDS in Haitians in the US. As we enter our next phase, NHAHA is looking for partnerships to implement the goals of the next five years focusing on capacity building, leadership and program development.
