Policy & Advocacy

POLICY & ADVOCACY

NHAHA strives to lead the health parity advocacy effort for protecting all Haitians and their communities from preventable, serious health threats and assuring access to culturally-competent care and community-based health promotion and disease prevention services.

TASKS
Advocate to regional and national and International policy makers and policy making bodies to promote sound national health and social policies that are responsive to the needs of the Haitian community and towards increasing the participation of Haitians in policy-making bodies.
Identify the political, social, and economic factors affecting the health of Haitians and raise public consciousness regarding these factors.
Advocate to increase Federal resources directed towards addressing health threats among Haitians.
Influence policies that promote health, equity, social justice and foster self-sufficiency for Haitians.
Publish and disseminate policy briefs and newsletters on health issues affecting Haitians.
Develop disseminate and advocate for health action plans designed to advance the health status of Haitians in the United States and abroad.
Sponsor regional policy and advocacy skills training and technical assistance sessions for CBOs and individuals working with the Haitian community.
Collaborate with other local, national, and international health care groups and associations to promote the health of Haitians.

Advocating for policies that are favorable to Haitians

Health Disparities:
Addressing health disparities in Haitian communities in the US in Mental Health, HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Heart Disease/Stroke

International Issues
I. Reconstruction of Haiti Health infrastructure including:
  - Integration of the Haitian Diapora
  - Integration of civil society in Haiti reconstruction
  - Ensuring funding for Haitian organizations

II. Improving Health outcomes for Haitians in the area of :
  - Child's Health
  - Women's Health
  - HIV/AIDS
  - Communicable Diseases
  - Infectious Diseases

Actions
  - Engage and continue ongoing dialogue with stakeholders in Haiti and the US
  - Join forces with other coalitions working on these issues
  - Provide Policy analysis such as white papers with policy recommendations on these issues
  - Develop advocacy campaigns around these issues
  - Expand our policy membership and ensure representation in Haiti
