NHAHA FOCUS
Healthy Haitians 2020 Initiative: In 2004, NHAHA launched its "Healthy Haitians 2010" initiative now renamed "Healthy Haitians 2020" to investigate specific health disparities for Haitians with the aim to facilitate the development of an action plan to improve Haitian health outcomes by 2010 in the following health areas:
- HIV/AIDS
- Cancer
- Mental Health
- Diabetes
- Cardiovascular Disease( including (obesity, hypertension)
These selected indicators were found to be the most critical (top 5) at our 1st annual conference in 2004 survey. The initiative was inpired by Healthy People, which is a set of health objectives for the nation that includes two overarching goals of increasing the quality and years of life, and eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in health by the first decade of the new century. A health improvement framework in three phases: Assessment, Capacity building, Leadership, Interventions and Evaluation is used to guide this initiative (Click Here to view Healthy Haitians 2020 framework)
The goal of the initiative was to conduct assessment activities in the areas of HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Mental Health, and cardiovascular disease including (obesity, hypertension). This will be accomplished through conferences, community forums, research studies, focus groups and other approaches that would help establish a baseline of health status in the Haitian community, assess the needs, identify barriers and gaps and formulate an action plan that will help shape community interventions in the listed health areas. The initiative spans accross our major strategies including : Annual conferences, public health education, Policy, Research, Technical Assistance, and community planning.
We have began the work in all specific health areas through our annual conference and had been successful in:
- HIV/AIDS with the publication of HIV among Haitian-born persons in the United States, 1985-2007 Marc, Linda G; Patel-Larson, Alpa; Hall, H Irene; Hughes, Denise; AlegrÃa, Margarita; Jeanty, Georgette; Eveillard, Yanick Sanon; Jean-Louis, Eustache; for the National Haitian-American Health Alliance
